EU Commission must disclose concerns

After the EU member states agreed to the compromise on amendments to the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) on 15 March, manufacturers of plastic packaging are criticising the numerous unfounded loopholes that still exist. The unjustified privileges granted to paper and cardboard packaging, for example, with regard to bans, the use of recyclates and reusable packaging obligations lead to more packaging waste, higher CO2 emissions and less recycling - a contradiction to the objectives of the regulation.

Reduce packaging weight for more sustainability

Constantia Flexibles and Plasthill Technical Films, a company of the Dutch Oerlemans Packaging Group, are partnering to bring Constantia Flexibles’ proprietary technology, CompresSeal, to the market in Europe. The CompresSeal film has higher seal integrity than standard polyethylene films and weighs up to 30% less. It will be available to the first customers in selected markets from August 2022 onwards.

Sustainably produced meat products in sustainable packaging: The new product line of the poultry sausage brand Gutfried by the Zur Mühlen Gruppe (Gutfried) is not only "organic", its packaging is also sustainable and was produced using recycled plastic. This innovative plastic packaging has now been presented by the participating companies Zur Mühlen Gruppe (Gutfried), BASF, SABIC and SÜDPACK. The special thing: Around two-thirds of the raw materials used for the packaging come from plastic waste, which is thus reconverted into valuable raw materials. Packaging concepts for minced meat

- A new look for a kitchen classic from the refrigerated section: SÜDPACK is launching two innovative packaging concepts for minced meat that do without bottom trays. What is more, the two concepts are mono-material packaging solutions based on polypropylene (PP). BASF and Fabbri Group have developed a sustainable solution for cling film used in fresh-food packaging: Based on BASF’s certified compostable ecovio®, Fabbri Group produces the highly transparent stretch film Nature Fresh. Meat, seafood as well as fruit and vegetables can be wrapped manually or with automatic packaging equipment. Industrial stretch packaging is also possible. It is the first certified compostable cling film that combines optimal breathability for an extended shelf life of fresh food with high transparency and excellent mechanical properties for automatic packaging. Nature Fresh is food-contact approved according to US and European standards.
