Post-consumer recyclates for automotive applications

TechnoCompound GmbH, Bad Sobernheim, and RE Plano GmbH, Lünen, a subsidiary of REMONDIS Recycling, have agreed to intensify their cooperation in the use of post-consumer recyclates (PCR) for automotive applications. Recycled plastics deliver revolutionary results

High-quality recycled-based plastic materials performs equivalently to virgin-based materials in moulding tools designed for virgin plastics. This is the experience of Polykemi’s customer Simoldes Plastics, a supplier to Stellantis, VW Group, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, BMW, Toyota, Scania and Mercedes-Benz. Tests and evaluations have also shown recycled materials to have surprising properties that may revolutionize our perception of recycled plastics.

In-line quality control for plastic recyclate

The RecyQuant research project makes it possible to monitor and maintain tolerable levels of foreign materials in the recyclate directly in the process. The joint project between ColVisTec AG and the SKZ Plastics Center successfully implemented the detection of foreign polymers and the direct readjustment of the dosing scales. The basis for this was the modeling of the photometric data of the plastic melt.

Hellweg Maschinenbau’s new, individually controllable R 200/20 Servo edge trimming system brings flexibility to the shredding of extrusion edge strips. Touchscreen control enables processors to adapt this step to production conditions and so optimize it for the specific application. Jointly developed with BREYER Extrusion, this new machine complements the extensive range of systems, also known as guillotines or chippers, from this global manufacturer of digitally controlled shredding machines for effective, energy-saving plastics recycling.

Bottle-to-bottle recycling plant

For Indian preform and plastic packaging manufacturer Magpet Polymer Pvt Ltd, Coperion and Herbold Meckesheim are collaborating technologies in construction of an entire plant for bottle-to-bottle recycling from a single source. In addition to mechanical processing of used PET bottles, the recycling system encompasses all process steps leading up to extrusion with a ZSK twin screw extruder, including pelletizing and an SSP (Solid State Polycondensation) reactor.

Meraxis and Fortum: distribution of recyclates

The Swiss trading group Meraxis and the Finnish company Fortum Recycling & Waste (Fortum) are deepening their existing cooperation with a strategic partnership. Meraxis will distribute Fortum recyclates throughout Europe. The offer includes PP, HDPE and LDPE recyclates as well as customized re-compounds. Through this cooperation, Meraxis is expanding its product range of recyclates and can thus offer its customers an even larger portfolio of sustainable material alternatives to prime material.

Strong growth for the recycling & circularity

Installed plastic recycling capacity of flexible polyolefins experienced a notable growth of 8% from 2018 to 2020, reaching a total of 2.7 million tonnes with estimated 200 recycling facilities, according to the latest study[1]. This capacity comprises of a large number of small to medium plants, averaging 10,000 tonnes, with the biggest facilities reaching over 40,000 tonnes.

Recycled polystyrene as safe food contact material

Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS), the value chain initiative to realise the circular economy for styrenic polymers, today confirmed having submitted a notification of a ‘novel technology’ under the new EU regulation 2022/1616. The technology ensures the safe use of rigid recycled polystyrene (rPS) as food contact material behind a functional barrier, in a so-called ABA structure. The notification aims at the immediate and continued availability of safe rPS produced with that established technology, under the stringent conditions and supervision foreseen by EU law.
