Composites manufacturer use of bio-based resins

Sustainable composites manufacturing leader Exel Composites has announced a new purchasing agreement with chemical manufacturing giant INEOS for over 100 metric tons of its ENVIREZ bio-based resin system. This deal will serve as a springboard for Exel Composites to phase out its use of hydrocarbon-derived resins. The Finnish pultrusion expert hopes to lead the composites industry towards a more sustainable future with zero change in material performance.

The "HyFiVE" project, in which experts from the SKZ Plastics Center in Halle (Saale) played a key role, came to an end at the end of December. The project provided groundbreaking insights into the adhesive-free joining of metal and fiber-reinforced plastic components, which will benefit the shipbuilding industry in particular.

5-axis CNC machining of carbon components

Refitech Composite Solutions has made a major innovation leap by installing a new 5-axis CNC machine for the finishing of composite components. This is in addition to the 3-axis machining centres the company already has in operation. The new machine will allow the machining of even more complex 3D shapes to be carried out fully automatically, with high speed, high quality and reproducibility in view of series volumes.

Innovative all composite IO

Supported by Refitech Composite Components and its German partner CG TEC, Whitecane from Duderstadt, Germany, has developed the all composite IO white cane. Due to the ergonomic thin-walled carbon grip and composite tube, the IO is extremely lightweight, making the it easy to handle while improving sensory perception. The design also features a patented yield mechanism, that reduces the risk of injury due to a collision or a caught cane, and is complimented with a lightweight GEO rolling tip.

ENGEL AUSTRIA is one of the winners of the JEC Innovation Awards 2020. SGL Carbon serially delivers composite materials for rotor blades to Airbus Helicopters

Since August of this year, SGL Carbon delivers two special glass fiber textiles, so-called non-crimped fabrics, for the new version of helicopter model H145 from Airbus Helicopters. These materials are used in the new, especially efficient five-blade rotor. Developed in close collaboration with Airbus Helicopters, the material has been qualified for the application for the next years to come.
