Triple Bubble® Technology

Kuhne Anlagenbau GmbH’s focus at NPE 2024, in Orlando, Florida, USA will be on large turnkey lines for extruding flexible simultaneously biaxially oriented barrier shrink films that do not require polyamide (PA) or polyester (PET) as a layer to impart strength to the structure. Consequently, they can be easily recycled together with (at most 5%) EVOH in the PE recycling stream. The required robustness and puncture resistance are achieved inline during processing in the Triple-Bubble® process using gentle radiation crosslinking employed by Kuhne. This acts from the outside to a shallow depth of only 5 to 10 µm, without damaging the EVOH layer and reducing recyclability. As a result, there is no need for an additional post-processing step, which would increase costs. The resultant films are sufficiently flexible and elastic to achieve good levels of shrinkage. At the same time, however, they also provide the mechanical strength required to be able to reliably fill the bags, even with contents weighing several kilograms.

Sustainable packaging

Under the main topic of “responsibility,” Anuga FoodTec will be directing the focus this year towards concepts that aim to use resources responsibly along the entire value chain. The two sustainable packaging concepts that ULMA Packaging and SÜDPACK will be presenting at the international trade event are sure to strike a chord. Both the flow pack and thermoformed packaging are based on monomaterial structures, which makes them fully recyclable. More-over, they stand out due to their high material efficiency.

Faster, easier and more secure: When it comes to the automated and highly efficient packaging of very flat or light products in film pouches, MULTIVAC has modified its B 625 chamber belt machine in such a way, that a sealing height of 0 mm is now possible on this proven model, which is designed to pack large batches of product.

Strong growth for the recycling & circularity

Installed plastic recycling capacity of flexible polyolefins experienced a notable growth of 8% from 2018 to 2020, reaching a total of 2.7 million tonnes with estimated 200 recycling facilities, according to the latest study[1]. This capacity comprises of a large number of small to medium plants, averaging 10,000 tonnes, with the biggest facilities reaching over 40,000 tonnes.
