Ferrum and KHS take over H.F. Meyer

As of January 1, 2025, Ferrum Packaging AG, leading manufacturer of can seamers for the beverage industry, and KHS GmbH are to take over H.F. Meyer Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG. H.F. Meyer has particular strengths in specific canning technology segments, including can turners and rinsers and vacuum bridges, and will contribute its specialist expertise to the merger that perfectly supplements Ferrum’s and KHS’ areas of competence. It will remain an independent company within the consortium.

Expert team barrier (shrink) films

A team of six Krehalon packaging specialists continue their career at Oerlemans Plastics in the Netherlands, a member of the OPACKGROUP. The producer is specialized in the production of sustainable recyclable barrier (shrink)films and packaging. Krehalon Netherlands stopped their production this summer.

SÜDPACK’s greenhouse gas reduction targets

A key milestone in climate protection – in April 2022, SÜDPACK committed to the targets of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). At the end of 2023, the company submitted its concrete targets to the SBTi for reducing green-house gas emissions and for improving its carbon footprint. Two years after signing the Commitment Letter, they were successfully validated in April 2024.

EU Commission must disclose concerns

After the EU member states agreed to the compromise on amendments to the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) on 15 March, manufacturers of plastic packaging are criticising the numerous unfounded loopholes that still exist. The unjustified privileges granted to paper and cardboard packaging, for example, with regard to bans, the use of recyclates and reusable packaging obligations lead to more packaging waste, higher CO2 emissions and less recycling - a contradiction to the objectives of the regulation.

Sustainable SÜDPACK packaging solutions

For SÜDPACK, the CFIA is all about “sustainability.” The French food industry’s leading trade show, which will be held from March 12 to 14 in Rennes this year, is considered one of the key industry gatherings in France with more than 1,700 exhibitors. SÜDPACK will be at booth E1 in hall 10 to provide information about its resource-saving SPQ printing technology while also drawing trade visitors’ attention to the recyclable packaging concepts of its Pure-Line films. As another highlight, SÜDPACK’s new LCA tool will be a point of focus. It makes fact-based decisions possible for an optimal packaging solution in terms of its ecological impact.

StarBlend®: customized compounds

SÜDPACK develops and produces thermoplastic compounds for special appli-cations in its Competence Center for compounding. The high-quality com-pounds made from conventional and bio-based raw materials are perfectly designed to meet the individual needs of customers. The compounds feature high media resistance, surface quality and scratch resistance and can include added recyclate. Since the beginning of this year, the special compounds, which are used in a wide variety of industries, have been marketed under the StarBlend® brand name.

EU packaging regulation PPWR

A legal assessment published today shows that the special rules for plastic packaging and exemptions for other packaging materials discussed as part of the planned EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) are very likely not compatible with EU law. According to the report, provisions that, for example, only prohibit plastic packaging require it to be reused or exempt coated paper packaging from the recycled content quotes, very likely violate the principle of equal treatment because there are no objective reasons for such unequal treatment. The legal experts also criticise procedural infringements because the Parliament and Council have not taken all relevant factors into account in their proposals. In a joint appeal, the associations EuPC, IK and Elipso, which commissioned the legal assessment, call on the Member States and the European Parliament to remove the material-specific special rules in the ongoing trilogue negotiations in order to create legal and planning certainty for companies.

SÜDPACK innovations honored once again

First the German Packaging Award 2023, now the WorldStar Packaging Award: the two SÜDPACK packaging concepts Tubular Bag PurePE and PharmaGuard® are among the winners of the global competition, which honors the best of the best in packaging innovation every year. Both solutions are based on mono-material structures and impressed the jury with their recyclability, greater material efficiency and reduced carbon footprints. The awards cere-mony will be held on June 15 in Bangkok during the ProPak Asia show.

Faster, better and more efficient

By investing the equivalent of over €11.5 million in the modernization of its filling and packaging equipment at its Carlsberg Brewery in Northampton, Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) is taking action to help make its production operations more sustainable. With the energy-efficient, high-performance Innofill Can DVD filler and resource-conserving Innopack Kisters Nature MultiPack (NMP) packer, two new KHS machines are to take on a key role at the brewery. They will improve production while reducing expected water consumption and use of plastic in packaging by increasing capacity for the clever Snap Pack Nature MultiPack, an innovative, sustainable secondary packaging system co-developed by KHS and Carlsberg Group.

Tosaf Fusion on expansion

Tosaf Fusion, developer and manufacturer of customised solutions for compounders and packaging producers, is clearly on course for expansion. The small but dynamic company was founded in 2017 as a subsidiary of Tosaf Compounds Ltd. It now holds a leading position in innovative products such as modifiers for PA, compatibilizers for PP and HFFR cable compounds, as well as tie layers for PE applications in agriculture and packaging.
